Peter Allen

My recent work attempts to illustrate my understanding of reality and illusion, and how our concepts determine what we see; as well our concepts of time and space, as I playfully reconsider how most people perceive them. My layered compositions contain familiar narrative references (fairy tales, folk tales, the American Western, comic books) which I then use to impose ideas about the nature of reality that I have found mysterious and intellectually compelling, such as the fluidity of time. I also incorporate writing into my work, as I am a poet. I want my drawings to exist as illustrated manuscripts, so the text becomes a design element bearing equal weight to the images. I work with colored pencil on paper almost exclusively, with additional layers of text in collaged letters.
